I first thought to make my boss happy is to give him/her lots of good achievements results with regards to my job.
But what matters most is to make him/her feel happy; that I am comfortable with how I work and with what I do to the team/company.

Thanks for this great article. Never realized that it is actually helpful in a career to be able to make your boss laugh. Luckily the boss has always appreciated my sense of humor. A fond memory is the day at lunch with our office mates that he laughed so hard at something I said, he almost fell out of his chair!

I'm not sure you can go after making someone laugh in such a strategic way. It's like analysing a joke.

John's Note:

You're absolutely right.

None of the ideas are magic bullets, they're just factors to consider. It's somewhat like learning to play golf. All the elements need to be internalized and become automatic. When you're analytically thinking about each part of the golf swing...you can't hit the ball.

Also, even if there were an almost sure-fire way to "make your boss laugh"... Subjective differences in personalities will always make it a guessing game. I could suggest wearing a red clown nose. Some people would think that was funny. Some would think it was totally stupid.

But hopefully, the study of humor will sharpen one's ability to see the everyday humor, and share it with others.
