John and Steve,

I just wanted to share how much I appreciate your website and thank Steve for sharing his speech in this blog post. I tried to utilize as many tips as I could to compete in the recent humorous speech contests. I received first place at the area level and received third place at the division level in Maryland. I posted the speech on my website.

http://improveyourcommute.blogspot.com/2010/10/sleepwalking-and-commuting-do-not-mix.html

I will continue to share your website as a premier location for tips and advice on creating a humorous speech. This is the 4th speech I have given at Toastmasters and your website helped me tackle this challenge and improved my chances for laughter.

Thank you for the tips! Judi Fox

Hi Douglas,

It sounds like you're doing the right things!

 You're in Toastmasters.
 You're competing.
 You're learning and studying.
 You're analyzing your performance.

Those activities put you on the path to better humor.

Timing of a speech is critical, when competing. Normally I recommend having a speech in the 6 minute or under range when practicing. A larger audience will laugh more. And the higher levels normally provide larger audiences. My feeling is that the higher you go, the easier it gets. Laughter is contagious and often the most difficult audience is the club level, because it's the smallest.

Keep competing. Enter every contest (evaluation, humor, tall tales, international, table topics, everything your District offers).

And watch for my Observational Humor article in Toastmaster magazine coming out in two weeks (November 2009).

Hello John,
Thank you very much for sharing Steve's speech, and thanks also for your most constructive evaluations on this speech.

I'd like to ask you whether you would give me your expertise evaluation on one of my humours speech. I hope I can improve my presentation skill from you.

I recently joined the Toastmasters Club at work. I did a humorous speech and won the club level. I could have been at 1st place if I didn't run over time. My problem was exactly like Steve's: "many of the jokes got such big, sustained laughs that I had to wait a longer time for the laughter to die down". But the Area Governor decided to respect my hardwork by "giving" me the 2nd Place plaque while praising my presentation and performance skills in front of my manager at work.

Thank you,
Douglas

10/10 from me. This is a great speech. I am sure Steve must have his own website. I learned call back and Rule-of-Three just by reading observation comments. Great Job Steve!

It's great speech. I agree, I had recently particpated in Humorous Speech contest at Club, Area and Division level in our Toastmaster Contest. I lost at Division level. I can understand and relate it very well. Now, while preparing for my Seventh Project -Reserach your topic. I think it helps me as I am planning to deliver my Speech on how to master giving Humorous Speech?
Thank you Steve and John, helping us by having it on the web.
