You're absolutely right, Sol. I believe every modern-day politician has writers who provide him or her with "off-the-cuff" witty lines. And I'm sure many, if not most, of Reagan's lines were written by his support staff. My point with some of the examples (two lines after being shot and the bombing-Russia line) is that Reagan had more of a natural skill at being spontaneously humorous than most other Presidents. It's highly unlikely that writers raced to his side after he was shot, feeding him lines. I remember watching an interview with his dughter Maureen, where she said that humor was a natural coping tool in the Reagan family. I believe Reagan had more of a tendency to use humor naturally than most other Presidents. But by no means do I believe he wrote all of his own lines. But he did fly his own helicopter, didn't he?

To Clarify : Many of the humorous comments made by President Reagan were actually created by professional speech writers.
Yes, Reagan did deliver the material well. But , just as many major politicians , executives, "movie stars and other celebrities" retain publicists with image-enhancers and damage-controllers always on call , President Reagan ( and long before that ) probably always had a ready supply of Professional Writers on hand to feed him ( or his "handlers" ) a goodly supply of whatever the situation called for. He did not fly his own helicopter or take his own X-rays --
and, I'm pretty sure ,he did not write most of "his own" jokes.

John-Thank you for giving us this insight. Humor really is what makes the world go round for me. Your newsletter adds more grin to what sometimes becomes a grind. Thank you.
